Disney’s Movie: The Finest Hours Review

I received the opportunity to review the Disney Movie “The Finest Hours” staring Chris Pine and Casey Affleck. So I opened the case and placed the movie in my PlayStation, grabbed my note pad and pen, and sat down on the couch ready to take a bunch of notes for an all inclusive review that any movie critique would be jealous of. Well plans change, at least after two hours, my plan changed.

As it turns out, I got so enthralled in the movie, so caught up in the characters, and so invested in the story…I completely forgot to take notes. After the movie was over I glanced down to a near empty note pad containing the words, “The Finest Hours” thinking, “well those may not have been my finest hours review wise.” How could I have completely forgotten to take notes?

I sat there thinking about random scenes in the movie, trying to put into words how I felt and how I reacted to the plot line, but nothing flowed. I simply stared at the note pad as the blue lines turned into monstrous waves splashing about in my mind. I thought about how the lives of several people hung on a hope and prayer that some how some one would find them in the storm. Can you imagine the feeling of desperation as all of the power failed and the ship began to sink into the ocean, a ship that was meant to protect them on the high seas, and they were unable to do anything but wait and see if the little toot of their whistle would bring a rescue party? Let’s not forget, cellphones were not yet invented in the 1950s, CB was spotty due to the storm, and communication was nearly impossible. Talk about feeling lost in a world that is more than 70% water.

Let me tell you, I felt the loss and the desperation. This movie not only tells the epic story of the greatest rescue in Coast Guard history, it puts the viewer right in the middle of the action. I could almost feel the icy waves as they sloshed over the side of the boat. My heart pounded as the Coast Guard’s 12-seater ship worked it’s way through gale force winds, the captain and crew hoping to make it over a hidden space of land and live to see another day. The movie sucked me into a wild ride where I became lost in the storm that hit Cape Cod back in 1952.

Then, to hit the story right in the heart, this Disney movie takes an in depth look into the actual story by visiting Chatham, conducting interviews and getting real life stories from witnesses in the bonus features. That’s when the idea “The Finest Hours is based on a true story” sinks in. Captain Bernie Webber and his crew actually had to go through these dangerous hypothermic waters to rescue several sailors fighting to stay alive. The quote “We all live, or we all die” makes me tear up as the real weight behind those words sink in. Real people, trying to rescue real sailors were willing to sacrifice their lives to make sure that they could rescue as many as possible.

Answers to a few questions:
Is it worth a watch? Yes. You will be amazed how you are sucked in to the story, almost like you are there with them as they struggled to survive.
Was the acting decent? Yes. The actors bring life to this story, making it feel as if they are the actual people who had to brave the storm.
Is this a movie the whole family can watch? Yes and No. This is an action-thriller with intense emotional and action scenes. Death is no stranger in this story and as such it may be just a little too much for a younger audience.
Do I suggest that you see this movie? Yes. I consider this a must see movie. I also suggest that all viewers check out the bonus features as well. They add to and enhance the story and it’s realism.

Film Synopsis:
This heroic action-thriller is based on the extraordinary true story of the greatest small-boat rescue in Coast Guard history. In 1952, a massive winter storm strikes off the coast of Cape Cod, ripping a T-2 oil tanker in half and trapping more than 30 sailors inside its rapidly sinking stern. When word of the disaster reaches the U.S. Coast Guard, four men led by Captain Bernie Webber (Chris Pine) set out in a 12-seat boat on a daring mission to rescue the stranded men, braving freezing cold, 60-foot waves and hurricane-force winds, and guided by Webber’s vow that “We all live, or we all die.” Packed with thrilling, larger-than-life action and anchored in a belief in the strength of the human spirit, The Finest Hours is a triumph.

Free Lego Captain Hook Printable Coloring Page

Peter Pan - Hook Lego Minifigure

Lego Captain Hook Minifigure from Disney’s Peter Pan

The Disney movie Peter Pan features an iconic villain with a hook for a hand. Living in Neverland, Captain Hook’s primary goal is to destroy Peter Pan and the lost boys by any means necessary, even if it mean kidnapping children and threatening to kill them. Nothing is too devious for old Hook.

Captain Hook shows no fear when it comes to sword fights, Indians and little fairies. All of these are just occupants in a land Hook wishes to call his own. However, I wouldn’t call him fearless. He is afraid of a little green crocodile that wants to eat him. Thanks to Peter Pan, this crocodile got a taste of hook by eating his hand, and now this crocodile wishes to eat the rest of Hook.

To commemorate Captain Hookn, Lego created an awesome minifigure depicting him with his iconic hat and hook, and uniform.

Whisker Haven Tales Coloring Page of Chauncey

Chauncey is a Critterzen from Whisker Haven. She is a very happy little corgi, especially when there is food around. In fact, she will go anywhere if there is food; she is the resident eating champion of Whisker Haven after all. Chauncey loves Berry because Berry always smells like food.

I haven’t seen her in any of the episodes yet, but she was featured on the Disney Whisker Haven Tales with the Palace Pets Facebook Page. This could mean she may be in a later episode.

Peter Pan Lego Minifigure

Peter Pan Lego Minifigure

The Disney movie Peter Pan features a 12-year old boy who refuses to grow-up and remains 12 forever. Living in Never Land, Peter Pan is the leader of the Lost Boys. He loves to fight pirates, talk with mermaids and go on adventures with his friends. After all, if you are going to live forever, you might as well have fun.

While it is all about fun and games, Peter also knows when to take things a little serious. When Wendy and his friends are captured by the notorious Captain Hook, Peter races into action to save them. Thankfully, Peter can take out Hook without flying and with one hand behind his back. Not to mention, at one point, he was able to cut off Hooks hand and feed it to a crocodile.

Epic Printable Star Wars Mother’s Day Cards

Free Printable Star Wars Mother's Day Cards

Mother’s Day is just around the corner and the hardest part for me is finding the proper card for my mom. It isn’t easy. Geeky cards are all but non-existent. It’s sad but true. To make matters worse, all of the cards I find are usually really sweet, loving, and for the most part, very boring and cliche. I mean, you can only say the same thing so many times before it loses its sincerity and becomes monotone.

Therefore, to get away from the boring and cliche and in honor of the month of Star Wars, I created several different Star Wars printable cards that any geeky mom would be happy to get! From BB-8 to Darth Vader, the cards below have the light side and the dark side of the force covered.

The best part is that these printable Star Wars Mother’s Day cards are free! To download these Mother’s Day cards simply click the image and save the PDF to your computer. Then print the document and create the card for a great Mother’s Day surprise.

To put the cards together:

  1. Print the document on card stock or regular paper
  2. Cut out the card along the outer black boarder. Do not cut the interior lines
  3. Fold the card in half along the shortest line so that the back and front face you and the text and blank side are on the other side.
  4. fold the card again along the other black line so that the front of the card is facing you and the back is on the back. The text should be in the interior of the card.
  5. Fill out and you are done

Star Wars Rebels Cubeecraft of Ezra Bridger

At a very young age, Ezra Bridger was forced to live on the streets after the Empire took his parents away. To survive, Ezra relied on his street smarts and his unknown ability to use the force. His time on the streets led him to become a thief and a con artist with little trust in anyone. Even when he met Kanan and the Ghost crew (Zeb, Hera, Sabine, and Chopper), Ezra was skeptical about who they were and what they wanted from him. Of course, as Ezra got to know the crew he learned their mission was far greater than simply stealing items to survive. They were Rebels fighting for a cause against the Empire to make the galaxy better place; and that was something Ezra wished to do.

With Ezra’s ability to use the force, Kanan took it upon himself to train Ezra in the ways of the Jedi. Ezra even created his own unique Lightsaber complete with built-in blaster and stun setting. But things are not what they seem. Ezra seems to have an affinity to the Dark Side, which makes Kanan nervous. In the Season 2 finale, we see a darker side to Ezra than we have seen in the past. What this means for the future, we can only speculate. However I can tell you this, It is going to be a log wait for Season 3.

With today being May 4th, I thought it would be fitting to create a Star Wars Cubeecraft featuring Ezra Bridger. It is after all “May the Fourth Be With You” Day, and this warrants a cool new Star Wars Paper craft. Ezra sports his orange suit, brown shoes, and tan jacket. He also comes with his unique lightsaber.

To Build the Cubeecraft:
Materials needed:
Card stock
x-acto knife

To make:

  1. Cut out each item along the outer black lines.
  2. Cut along the white on each tab using the x-acto knife
  3. Cut along each red line using the x-acto knife
  4. Fold along each inner solid black line and slide each tab into the slots you created with an x-acto knife to form a cube of the head, body, arms, and feet
  5. Slide the arms through the red slots on either side of the body.
  6. Slide the feet through the red slots at the base of the body.
  7. Slide the now completed body through the red lots of the head.
  8. Fold the gun in half and slid it under the fingers then refasten the tab

Ezra is now complete.
To download the cubeecraft click the images below and save them to your computer. Then print and create!
