WARNING
Spoilers Below!

Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is a hilarious action comedy with funny one-liners and humorous banter. Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez perform in perfect harmony as the dynamic duo, Edgin and Holga. They trek across the land with their newly formed party to find relics and take down the evil Forge.

While their quest sounds serious, for us viewers, it’s rather haphazard, almost as if someone is rolling checks to see if the characters will succeed in their crazy schemes. For example, would throwing potatoes at a prison guard actually aid in an escape? Roll a strength check to find out. My guess is Holga rolled a nat 20 because the prison board gasped with shock screaming, “She’s throwing potatoes!” it was a perfect throw, a perfect distraction, and the perfect moment to grab poor Jarnathan, the Aarakocra, and dive out of the prison window. I will never look at a potato the same again.

An Aarakocra isn’t the only DND creature we see in Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves. Fans will spot Humans, elves, tieflings, Red Wizards, Mimics, an Owlbear, a Black Dragon, Yuan-tis, a Gelatinous Cube, a Displacer Beast, Themberchaud (Pudgy), Golems, Rust Monsters, Intellect Devourers, and more! The encounter with the Intellect Devourers is a hilarious scene as the party attempts to keep quiet while the monsters walk by. It’s as if the party rolled high on their stealth checks….or the team has a very low intelligence stat. As Edgin states, “Well, that’s a little hurtful.”

As far as the monsters go, the Displacer Beast was awesome to see, and the mimic is fantastic, but, I will admit…I love Pudgy. He is just a fat chibi dragon that looks to devour the world…and he does it with little effort. He may live in the Underdark, but he lights up the screen with his little round self. Pudgy is now on the list of my top five favorite Dragons.

Pudgy never gives up trying to eat our team of heroes, even after being stabbed in the head by Zenk. This is where Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves turns into an offshoot of Galaxy Quest, teaching the audience to… Say it with me now, “Never Give up! Never surrender!” Although Edgin’s rendition is a little more confusing, he also believes in the motto of the Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector, stating, “We must never stop failing, because the minute we do, we’ve failed” This means that we should never give up because as long as we are failing there is still hope, hope that we will get it right. However, since Galaxy Quest is in the future, perhaps the Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector adapted Edgin’s motto for their own. They may actually be plagiarists.

There are so many scenes that will make the audience laugh, I would need several blog posts to go over them all. From digging up graves and talking to the dead to melting illusions, most scenes are created with a purpose, to make us laugh. I often had to pause the film so I could laugh it out. I was unable to hear the movie otherwise.

With great character synergy, wonderful DND monsters, and a fun lesson, Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is a fantastic movie and is fun for fans and adventurers. I give the movie FIVE stars. I think Pudgy would agree.
