Kronk’s Challah Recipe

I think we can all agree, Ysma didn’t appreciate her new model, Kronk, like she should have. Kronk could talk to squirrels, camp, jump rope, and complete several crazy tasks Yzma demanded. Although he had a hard time reading Yzma’s poison labels, it turned out for the better for Kuzco. One of Kronk’s best features has to be his cooking. Kronk’s knowledge of food and flavors would be a perfect art for any henchman. Yzma may have hated Kronk’s Spinach Puffs, I can safely say, I wanted to try them,

While Spinach puffs sound delicious, apparently they are not his only signature dish. Disney’s Facebook page shared a recipe called Kronk’s Challah Recipe where Kronk teaches us how to make the perfect braided loaf.

Challah is a Kosher yellow loaf of braided bread made with eggs, water, flour, yeast, and salt. It is a type of ceremonial bread eaten at Jewish holidays and religious occasions including Shabbat. Today, we often see challah “braided,” but it can actually be served in a variety of shapes and flavors depending on the specific celebration and on the cultural group making it.

Follow the recipe below to make your own Challah and share it with the family. Yzma probably won’t like it, so give her a bowl of kitty food and keep the bread for the still-human family members.

Ingredients:
1 cup lukewarm water
2 tsp active dry or instant yeast
4 cups of all-purpose flour
1/4 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp salt
2 large eggs
1 large egg yolk (reserve the egg white for the egg wash)
1/4 cup canola oil

Step 1: Place water in a small bowl and sprinkle in yeast and a pinch of sugar. Stir to combine. Let stand for 5 to 10 minutes until a frothy layer forms across the top.
Step 2: Combine flour, sugar, and salt

Step 3: In the center of the flour, add eggs, eggs yolk, and oil. Whisk it together.
Step 4: Combine yeast mixture and egg mixture. Mix yeast, eggs, and flour until a dough that is tough to mix forms.

Step 5: Place the dough on a floured surface and knead for about 10 minutes. The dough is ready when it is smooth and holds shape.
Step 6: Place dough in an oiled bowl, cover, and place somewhere warm. Let the dough rise for about 2 hours until it has doubled in bulk.

Step 7: Divide the dough into 3 equal pieces. Roll each piece of dough into a long rope.
Step 8: Gather dough ropes and squeeze them together at the top. Braid the ropes, and squeeze the other ends together when complete.

Step 9: Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the braided loaf on the paper and sprinkle with flour. Cover and let rise ina warm place for about 1 hour, until dough puffs up.
Step 10: Prepare a rack in the middle of the oven and heat to 350 F. Whisk egg white and 1 tbsp of water to make the egg wash. Brush the mixture all over the dough in the cracks and down the side.

Step 11: Bake for 30-35 minutes, rotating halfway through. Remove when the challah is deeply browned and 190F in the middle
Step 12: Let cool, slice, and enjoy!
