Suffragette: The 19 Days of Suffrage Giveaway

When you take the time to vote this year, remember to take a moment and thank all the women who fought to give you the right to vote. It was not an easy battle. Those who fought for our right to vote lost so much. Equality was an alien term for the leaders during that time and sparked fear in those who could not handle change. As such, these Suffragettes were made to look crazy, never allowed to see their kids, had to hide from the law, lost their jobs and some even lost their lives. Yet, the women continued to fight, never giving into the popular archaic thoughts that infected the lives of society. The women looked to the future, to hope of equality.

In recognition of their fight, Focus Features took this momentous event in history and created a film, inspired by true events, called Suffragette. This heart-breaking and inspirational drama focuses on the real foot soldiers of the Suffragette movement and how they turned to violence as the only route to change. They were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

To be a woman in today’s world is difficult as many people, and government organizations are afraid of women who speak their minds and tell the truth. While a man is touted as a leader, and a genius when he does so. Women are constantly thought of as the archetypal witch if they do not conform to the age old stereotype of being submissive and quiet. Being a vocal woman is tough when the world wishes you would be silent and suffer.

I work in a male state prison so everyday is a challenge being a woman!

I think that being a woman today is still difficult because we have so many things to do everyday from taking care of children to cooking for family but unfortunately violence and discrimination are still happen to us!

Being a woman presents us with many unique, complex issues. Violence & oppression of women is still rampant. I’m grateful for the women who came before me & fought for the freedoms & rights we have today, & for those who continue to do so throughout the world. I informally mentor underprivileged teen girls in my community so that they can take refuge from & break the cycle of abuse against females they’ve grown up in.

Being a woman today is complex… We still have a lot of pressure to be who we were, but also the additional pressure to be more than we were. I try harder everyday, because I know that without at least a little bit of a fight things can’t be better (or more equal) for my daughter. And I’m thankful for all the women who came before who also took that extra bit of energy to fight, despite all the naysayers. Because if they hadn’t I wouldn’t be able to enjoy so many of the things I’m privileged enough to enjoy today (be that opportunities in the workplace or society in general).

Being a woman today is easier in some ways and more difficult in others. I’ve worked in male dominated workplaces in the past and they were openly hostile. I would hope that has improved.
