Suffragette: The 19 Days of Suffrage Giveaway

When you take the time to vote this year, remember to take a moment and thank all the women who fought to give you the right to vote. It was not an easy battle. Those who fought for our right to vote lost so much. Equality was an alien term for the leaders during that time and sparked fear in those who could not handle change. As such, these Suffragettes were made to look crazy, never allowed to see their kids, had to hide from the law, lost their jobs and some even lost their lives. Yet, the women continued to fight, never giving into the popular archaic thoughts that infected the lives of society. The women looked to the future, to hope of equality.

In recognition of their fight, Focus Features took this momentous event in history and created a film, inspired by true events, called Suffragette. This heart-breaking and inspirational drama focuses on the real foot soldiers of the Suffragette movement and how they turned to violence as the only route to change. They were willing to lose everything in their fight for equality – their jobs, their homes, their children and their lives.

It means being independent and shooting for your dreams.

Women came a long way and you do see them in lead roles in society, as far as the wages go, well better but still need some adjustment here and there.

Something I feel we, as women, still fight is the pay scale! I read that women get paid 74 cents to the dollar compared to men and women of color, even less! This makes little sense to me-equal pay for equal work! No longer is only the man supporting the household!

Today I think we don’t see a difference between a woman and a man. My daughter doesn’t have anything holding her back.

Compared to the original Suffragettes, women of the current century have improved gender equality. However, this does not indicate the end of a legacy, rather it should bolster us to continue this legacy to the future generations until gender equality is achieved. My way of contributing to this legacy is by teaching young children Lego and Barbie dolls are fun for both genders.

  1. I love that I can do or be ANYthing I want!

I’m a stay at home mom right now, I left my job of ten years one year ago. It’s been rough. Trying to have some sort of identity outside the baby. And I never thought I would be cooking/cleaning so much. But it is what is right now.

  2. To be a woman today means to me, that I have to be strong and independent. That I can achieve anything I can set my mind to.

Being a women today is still difficult but a lot easier the n in was fifty years ago. Women face many challenges every day but we are strong. We have come a long way baby!
