My First Time Seeing an Episode of Spongebob Squarepants

Who lives in a pineapple under the sea? I just recently, as in less than 24 hours ago, found out that it is Spongesquare Bobpants…I mean Spongebob Squarepants. Here is a confession for the whole world, until I was offered a copy of Spongebob Squarepants the Complete Eleventh Season on DVD to watch and review, I had never seen a single episode. Yup, my 15 yeahs or so streak has ended.

With my state making the “Stay-At-Home” Order to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 virus, I had some time to watch nine hours of Spongebob on DVD. Yes…NINE hours…and to be honest, I don;t remember much about my binge watching activities other than my family and I went through several bowls of popcorn. There was laughter, confusion, and surprise to be had by all, mostly confusion on my part.

I simply don’t understand the purpose of Spongebob Squarepants. For example, in the episode, “There is a Sponge in My Soup” we find three hippies that choose to squat in a soup made from near-garbage leftovers (gross). The whole episode is about evicting these annoying hippies so that the soup can be served to customers. First of all…What is up with the snorkel? Aren’t they already under water? Second, why has Krabby Patty not been shut down with all of the obvious health violations? and third, how did three hippies, a sponge, and a starfish fit into that tiny pot?

The questions continue as absolute absurdity takes place in every episode And after nine hours I can only conclude that the absurdity is what makes the show so much fun for so many people. Spongebob Squarepants allows people to shut off their minds, stop thinking, and just enjoy the insanity of a make believe world. With all that is happening in the world right now, I can see people needing to retreat to silly moments in order to escape the confines of reality, and Spongebob certainly allows this escape. From the ocean floor to outer space Spongebob breaks all barriers and simply has fun,
