The Good Dinosaur Missed

The Good Dinosaur asks the question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? Pixar Animation Studios takes you on an epic journey into the world of dinosaurs where an Apatosaurus named Arlo makes an unlikely human friend. While traveling through a harsh and mysterious landscape, Arlo learns the power of confronting his fears and discovers what he is truly capable of.

In this Pixar film, the theory is that dinosaurs become the dominate intelligent species on the planet and humans become more like pets. We see the story of a boy and his dog but in a humorous and interesting twist. Who is the dog you ask? None other than the Human Boy, Spot. Spot is a wild, tough and tenacious human buy who has lived alone in the wilderness for much of his life. When Arlo and Spot find each other, they go on an adventure and along the way, Arlo develops an unlikely friendship with Spot who helps him realize he is capable of much more than he ever thought.

Frosty Pumpkin Smoothie from R. W. Knudsen Family

I had just finished making my famous Pumpkin Cookies for all my friends and family and I look down to see I had a little less than half a cup of pumpkin puree left. It is a conundrum that happens every year when I am baking, I always have a small amount of left over Pumpkin Puree. I could never bring myself to throw it out because it is so darn delicious. So every year, I started finding random recipes that took a small amount of pumpkin puree and making them. It has since become something of a tradition in my family as everyone gets to try new pumpkin treats every year.

Of course with every new recipe, there is a chance of the, “I should never have tried that shock” baking it’s ugly face into existence. My family has been a victim to a few of the crazy pumpkin recipes out there. But for the most part, we have enjoyed the delicious taste of pumpkin especially in Pumpkin pancakes and pumpkin ice cream. This year we decided to try something even more different. I was told about a Pumpkin Smoothie (yeah, it scared us at first as well) that took very little time and included one of my favorite holiday spices, nutmeg. With the right amount of pumpkin puree needed and the nutmeg ready, I quickly made this rather easy concoction.

Let me just say, Delicious. Who knew that apple juice and pumpkin puree could blend so well? I didn’t. I did change a few things within the recipe. My family is allergic to soy so I used 1/2 cup of VAT milk instead. It makes it creamier. I also baked the pumpkin seeds and then chopped them. I find that pumpkin seeds taste so much better when they are cooked. but other than that I kept the rest the same. I am sure you can choose your own organic apple juice for the recipe, but since the recipe comes from the R.W. Knudsen Family®, they suggest their apple juice. Who can blame them.

This recipe was found on R.W. Knudsen Family® website. They have many more recipes that are worth a try! I suggest going over there and checking out what they have to offer. In the mean time, here is the Frosty Pumpkin Smoothie recipe that is worth a try.

Frosty Pumpkin Smoothie from R. W. Knudsen Family

  • Servings: 2-3
  • Difficulty: easy
  • Print

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups R.W. Knudsen Family® Organic Apple Juice
  • 1/3 cup pure canned pumpkin (I suggest Libby’s)
  • 1/2 cup milk or plain soy milk (I used VAT milk)
  • 1/4 cup honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 cup crushed ice
  • 2 tablespoons raw hulled pumpkin seeds, chopped (I baked mine)
  • 2 to 3 fresh apple wedges

Directions

  1. BLEND juice, pumpkin, milk, honey, cinnamon, nutmeg and crushed ice in blender until smooth.
  2. Pour into 2 to 3 glasses. Sprinkle a few pumpkin seeds on top of each if desired. Decorate rim of glass with apple wedge.

The Heroes in Our Lives and Our Country

19 Days of Suffrage Day 8.1

Today is one of the most important days of the year, Veteran’s Day. It is that time of year where we honor our Veterans and thank them for all they have done. Really, there is nothing we could do to ever repay them for their service and sacrifice, but a ‘thank you’ can go a long way. The men and women who fought, died, and are fighting for this country are some of the biggest heroes this nation could ever have. I think, in honor of these heroes and in honor of Veteran’s Day, we continue the #19DaysofSuffrage campaign by reflecting on those who have sacrificed to provide our freedoms. Take a moment and thank a Veteran, have your kids sit down and talk with a Veteran, get them to think about how everything this one person did ensured our freedoms we have today.

After the quality time with a Veteran, get the whole family together and think about these questions.

While reflecting on your heroes, take a moment to think about all the women fighters in the military. Did you know it wasn’t until 1948 when congress passed the Women’s Armed Services Integration Act? This granted women permanent status in the military subject to military authority and regulations and entitled to veterans benefits. Women served in the military long before that Act was signed. In fact, in WWI, 400,000 women served at home and abroad as mechanics, ambulance drives, pilots, administrators, nurses, and in other non-combat roles. However, it wasn’t until 1948 when they were granted benefits and permanent status. That was only 67 years ago. Think about how far we have come and how far we still have to go.

The #19daysofsuffrage campaign continues with a message of Hope. This week marks an important day for US citizens, Veteran’s Day. It is a day where we honor those who have fought, died and are fighting in the military for the freedoms that we have and to ensure our freedoms remain. Veteran’s Day reminds every US citizen that we would not be where we are today without our Military Heroes. We thank them and their service, their sacrifices, and their strength.

Whisker Haven Free Printable Activities

Where do Princess Palace Pets go to relax and recuperate after a hard day of work and play? Take a peek into the world of Whisker Have for a few minutes and catch the palace pets in their new adventures. Whisker Haven is a safe place for the palace pets to relax and meet other palace pets. Here they are able to talk to each other, celebrate big events and make new friends!

Ms. Featherbon is the magical gatekeeper of Whisker Haven and guide to all the Palace Pets. Treasure, Petite, Sultan, Pumpkin, Dreamy, Berry, Lily, Bibbidy, and Sweetie are just a few that appear in the new animated series produced by Disney Junior. I hope the show will start to include some of the more unique palace pet characters such as Blossom, Gleam, or Taj.

    2. The Whisker Haven Night Knight Guard: Sultan and Treasure try to prove who is the bravest knight in Whisker Haven. After a series of tests, the Palace Pets ask Pumpkin to judge who should be named to the Whisker Haven Knight Night Guard.
    3. Throwing a Ball: Pumpkin is throwing the most grand ball that Whisker Haven has ever seen, and the Palace Pets are here to help! But can she get the palace ready in time for the celebration?
    4. Cake-tillion: The annual Cake-tillion celebration is about to begin in Whisker Haven! But where is Lily with all of the whisker cakes? The Palace Pets must find her in the woods before the sweetest day of the year!
    5. Hat’s a Wrap!: It’s the Whisker Haven Derby, and one of the Palace Pets is chosen as the Royal Derby Starter. Pumpkin creates a hat perfect for the occasion which she gives Treasure, but Treasure is not so sure about Pumpkin’s derby day gift.
    6. A Dreamy Birthday: Berry, Pumpkin and Treasure are preparing a birthday party surprise for Dreamy! Can they successfully plan the perfect birthday party without Dreamy finding out?
    7. The Cookie Boogie!: When Ms. Featherbon’s magic dust turns Berry’s cat-shaped cookies into real cats, it’s up to Treasure and Berry to stop the cookies from ruining Pumpkin’s Dance Recital.
    8. TuTu Terrific: The Pets visit the Tutu Flower Fields to make their own tutus for the Tutu Terrific Parade. Petite may not know what makes her terrific, but her best friends sure do!
    9. Harvest Haven: It’s time for the Annual Harvest in Whisker Haven. As the pets try to find enough biscuits for the Critterzens, Treasure and Sultan compete to find the most biscuits while Petite searches with a plan of her own…
    10. Flying High Tea: Sultan’s eager to try Berry’s biscuits, but her prizes treats are only available for the Pets’ tea party. The rambunctious tiger joins the event, but unfortunately, the tea party attendance comes with strict rules.

With such wonderful episodes, I thought it would be fun to include some printable activities featuring the characters of Whisker Haven Tales. The kids will love searching for Berry, matching the shadows, coloring their favorite Palace Pet, playing the Whisker Haven Memory Game or printing the stickers for art projects, books or crafts. Let’s be honest, we adults even get a kick out of these fun printables. The Word Search may be to advanced for some kids but I know some adults who may just spend five minutes to complete the puzzle to help clear the head after a long day.
