Join Huey, Dewey, Louie and Webby on Their Global Adventures in Ducktales: Destination Adventure! This all new DVD features eight of their most exciting adventures this side of Mt. Neverrest. Two of the episodes are actually from the classic series! Talk about bringing back memories of my childhood.
I have to admit, as a fan of the original 1987 Ducktales TV series, I was a little apprehensive about watching this 2017 edition. I couldn’t help but think that sometimes it is hard to make a classic better or, at the very least, different enough to separate it from the classics. I actually avoided the cartoon, fearing the worst. However, when I was asked to review the new Ducktales DVD release, I nodded my head and thought…it is time.

From the first moment I started watching Ducktales: Destination Adventure, I could tell this was going to be a little different especially when it came to the look of the beloved characters. Unlike the original characters, which were drawn with more rounded edges and brighter colors, the characters in the 2017 version have much sharper edges and have a flatter look, like old paper. It isn’t bad art, just different.
Of course a cartoon is not graded on the art alone, one has to focus on character, and in that department things have changed but also stayed the same. The boys, Huey, Dewey, and Louie are still as mischievous as ever, whether it is partaking in crazy sports with the Greek gods or jumping through wormholes. Webby on the other hand has changed quite a bit. Her character has gone from taking a back seat to full frontal assault as a deadly weapon. She can parkour, fight, and even get herself in and out of trouble better than the boys.
For example: in “The Beagle Birthday Breakout!” Webby meets a new friend and ends up crashing the Beagle’s Birthday party to their Ma. Instead of waiting for a rescue, she actually flips and dodges her way out, and later even helps rescue the boys from the Beagle invasion.
I have to admit, after watching Webby be as crazy as the boys and watching the new stories unfold, I completely forgot about comparing the original and the new. I just enjoyed the cartoon. The new Ducktales is just different enough that it feels brand new and yet it kept true to the adventurous spirit that the original Ducktales portrayed. Ducktales: Destination Adventure certainly is a great collection to watch the new escapades.
