Monster High The Movie! Review and Yummy Ghoul Juice Recipe!

Get ready for high school with our favorite characters from Monster High. We get to watch as Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, Frankie Stein, and more star in the live-action movie musical based on the iconic Monster High franchise about the children of famous monsters and creatures. Monster High The Movie is available on DVD from Paramount Home Entertainment as of August 15, 2023, for the suggested retail price of $10.99.

I got the chance to review Monster High The Movie (affiliate link) and here is what I thought. Spoilers below.

In this version of Monster High, we find Clawdeen an outcast in the human world, and a possible outcast at Monster High. Why? Because she is half human and half wolf. It’s a weird concept since one would think being a werewolf already insinuates that she would be half human. However, in the Monster High lore, werewolves stay wolf-y 24/7. Being half human, Clawdeen shifts between human form and wolf form and this uncontrolled shift could have Clawdeen removed from Monster High, where she is finally being accepted by her peers.

Thankfully, Clawdeen meets amazing friends who are supportive of her quirks, just as she supports them. Together, they attempt to help Clawdeen remain a wolf 24/7 by using Draculaura’s forbidden witchcraft to find Hyde’s lab and the monster formula.

This friendship power sticks true to the animated series, as we see Clawdeen Wolf, Draculaura, Frankie Stein, and many others have the “friendship is more important than anything” vibe. It is the driving force that makes the group able to face anything as long as they are together, even if it means going against the rules of the school, advice from adults, or parental guidance.

While I am not keen on the constant insubordination as the characters defy authority, it is a friendship story. When the secrets do eventually get unburied and the truth gets out, adults and students come together to fix what is broken and make Monster High a safe place for all.

Since the story isn’t bad, and follows the theme of Monster High, I will give the movie 4 stars. However, as a fan of the animated series, I have to knock it one star for a couple of reasons.

  1. There are a few unneeded moments of political mumbo-jumbo points that will make fans roll their eyes. Can we just have a movie with out all of the bows to reality? It is getting cumbersome.
  2. The ‘good guy goes bad guy’ film trope is over used and falls short of compelling. We need a new story telling guide. This classic growth to climax and fall is so overdone, it is like beating a zombie.

I do however, recommend watching Monster High The Movie. The music is fun, the costumes try to match the animated series, and the friendship power is inspirational.

Anna’s Hot Cocoa Blizzard Recipe from Disney

This week, Disney’s Facebook page shared a recipe featuring Anna from Disney’s Frozen and her delicious Hot Cocoa Blizzard. Let me put this into perspective. It is mid summer, hotter than Hades’ fire, and we are given a holiday recipe meant to warm the bones in the dead of winter. Hey Disney, not all of us have am Elsa that can produce a blizzard in the summer months, hahaha

Since it is hot outside, and Disney has provided a great recipe for the chocolate lovers, there are two ideas that can change this drink from a winter drink to a summer drink. After you make the drink following the recipe provided below and before you add the whipped cream, you can do one of two things.

  1. Let the drink cool and then add fun snowflake ice cubes (affiliate link).This will turn the Hot Cocoa into an Iced Cocoa., sort of like an Iced Mocha. Follow up with the whipped cream topping and a sprinkle of chocolate shavings and the drink has become a cooling sensation for the whole family.
  1. Let the drink cool place 1 cup of the hot chocolate in a blender with a cup of ice and blend until it becomes a frappe. Add a few chocolate chips while blending to give it the extra chocolate oomph it needs. Once blended to your liking, top with whipped cream. Now the hot beverage is the perfected iced drink for summer.

Ingredients

  • 4 Cups of Milk
  • 1/4 Cup Hot Cocoa Powder
  • 3/4 Cup Sugar
  • Chopped Chocolate Bar
  • Whipped Cream

Directions

  1. Gather cocoa powder, milk, and sugar
  2. Over medium heat, whisk mixture until warm (not boiling)
  3. Add chopped chocolate bar and whisk until it melts in smoothly
  4. Pour into your favorite mug and top with whipped cream

Haunted Mansion Printables and Fun Paper Crafts

Today, Disney is releasing a brand new take on their famous ride, The Haunted Mansion. A reboot to the Eddy Murphy Haunted Mansion, this supernatural horror comedy may prove to be a bit more scary as a woman and her son enlist a motley crew of so-called spiritual experts to help rid their home of supernatural squatters and an evil entity that has disrupted the harmony of the house.

Haunted Mansion boast an amazing cast, staring LaKeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Dan Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Jared Leto.

To celebrate the theatrical release of the Haunted Mansion film, I decided to share several printables that I have collected over the years, along with a couple of printables I made myself. Are You Afraid of the Dark? Ghost Island Is Food for our Nightmares

Here it comes, a new installment from the Midnight Society, in Are You Afraid of The Dark? Ghost Island! This time our members decide to hold off on the scary stories and go to an island resort to clear their heads. Only, this destination may not be all they hoped for. Obviously, we know by the tile, that the supernatural will be heavily involved, providing our imaginations with more fodder to produce freaky nightmares.

To start the scary and infamous view of Ghost Island, we watch as a mom and her kids fall victim to the supernatural world. It becomes the premise for the entire story, making the series a little dark and suspenseful. Let’s face it, when victims roam the halls as ghostly apparitions, It is a pretty dark story. Throw in room 13 and a creepy mirror, and this story feeds our nightmares. I mean, mirrors already freak me out and now they are creepifying them even more.

I will say this, I found this season to be far more scary than the previous seasons of the remake. It had all the hallmarks of a Steven King nightmare complete with bleeding walls, beyond scary ghosts, and the fear of confinement. I closed my eyes several times and sat on the edge of my seat as the show attempted and succeeded in scaring me. Then again, I am a baby when it comes to ghost stories. I could just be sensitive to this installment, but either way, my nightmares were a plenty after watching Ghost Island.

While the suspense, disturbing mirror, and fear tactics are crazy throughout the series, the kids provide a nice comedy relief, here and there, as they go into situations over confident and ready for the adventure. To be honest, their adventure brought up some nostalgic moments leading me back to my days when I used to watch the original Are You Afraid of the Dark?.. There are even a few Easter Eggs for us original watchers as well, if we can open our eyes long enough to see them..

With so much epic scary scenes, a nod tp the past, and a great story, I will give the Ghost Island season 5 stars. Great Job Nickelodeon! The DVD you sent for me to review has created many of sleepless nights, and I couldn’t be happier.
