Delicious Candy Cane Cookies Recipe

It’s that time of year where the Christmas tree comes down. The ornaments are removed and carefully placed in their boxes to be stashed away until the next holiday season. In my family, that is when we find all the unwanted broken candy canes. I am not sure why a broken candy cane is so unwanted. I mean, they have the same flavor as an all-in-one-piece candy cane, but none the less they are stashed and hidden away within the tree to be discovered at seasons end. Each one I find looks as if it clings to the branch of the tree hoping it won’t fall because the cane part of the candy is severed within its candy cane shaped plastic wrapper.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I couldn’t bring myself to throw away these yummy morsels, abandoned by the need for perfection. They weren’t bad or opened they were simply broken. So I decided I would use these flavorful cane pieces to make an end-of-the-holiday tradition. All broken candy canes are opened and placed in a large Ziploc bag. They are then pounded into oblivion, which is actually really fun for the whole family. It is amazing how cool it is to be allowed to break something while making a ton of noise. I can tell you there is no hint of a candy cane when we have finished the job. FYI, do this on a very strong surface or cutting board.

Once the candy canes have been pulverized, they have to be sifted to remove all of the larger pieces. The larger pieces are not used in this recipe so I save them to put in hot chocolates and/or coffee. It gives them a slight peppermint flavor and it is so yummy.

To finish off the Candy Cane mixture, I add 3/4 cups of powdered sugar and mix it together. This mixture will be used in the filling and on the outside of the cookie.

Once the Candy Cane mixture is done the rest is pretty simply to prepare. For the cookie dough, I cream the wet together until soft and fluffy. Then I add the dry until it is well blended. The dough must chill for at least one hour, so I place it in the refrigerator as soon as possible. This chill process is very important. It makes the dough much easier to handle and it makes it a yummy crumbly cookie.

While the dough is chilling, I make the cream cheese mixture using soft cream cheese. I Cream the cream cheese until smooth. Gradually, I add the powdered sugar and 3 tablespoons of the pounded garnish. It will get a bit clunky. This is where I add the milk to smooth it out and I blend it until i’s smooth and creamy. It then gets scooped into a piping bag with a large opening nozzle. It doesn’t matter what shape. This is just to make filling each cookies easy and fast.

Here comes the hard part:
Once the dough has chilled for an hour, I remove the dough from the refrigerator. To make the cookie I first take about a teaspoon of dough and roll it into a ball. Then using the handle of my large wooden spoon, I shape the dough around the bottom part of my handle. This is creating a hole or cavern in the cookie so that I can fill it with the cream cheese mixture. Gently twist the handle and pull the dough off the wooden spoon. It will look like a little dough teacup without the handle. I then fill the cavern 2/3 of the way up with the cream cheese filling mixture. The dough is then pinched closed and shaped back into a ball. The filled ball is then placed on a creased cookie sheet. The process is then repeated 35 times. This may not be as simple as “Scoop and Bake” but the work is oh so worth it.

The round balls are then baked for about 12-15 minutes. They must be removed from the oven before they brown. Browning them kills the crumbly goodness and that would just be sad.

Once they are fully baked, they are then partly cooled. While the cookies are warm, not hot, they are rolled in the remaining pounded candy cane garnish. They kind of look like powdered doughnut holes when all is said and done. But, they taste nothing like a doughnut hole. They are more like yummy pieces of peppermint candy heaven wrapped in a fluffy, crumbly, cakey goodness. The candy canes are no longer rejected, they are embraced and devoured.

I have provided the recipe for free below with a little print button to save it for later. No candy cane should be rejected and these cookies are a perfect reason as to why all candy canes matter.

Candy Cane Cookies

  • Servings: 36
  • Print

Ingredients
For the Dough

  • 2 sticks of soft butter
  • 1/2 Cup Powdered Sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla
  • 2.5 Cups of flour

Garnish

  • 6-8 Peppermint Candy Canes (depending on size)
  • 3/4 Cups powdered sugar

Cookie Filling

  • 1/2 cup Cream Cheese
  • 1.5 tsp milk
  • 3/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 3 Tbsp of Garnish mixture (the candy cane Mixture)
Directions
Cookie Dough

  1. Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla together until smooth and fluffy
  2. Add flour and mix until it forms a dough like consistency
  3. Place in a glass bowl, cover and place it in the refrigerator for at east 1 hour

Garnish

  1. Place candy canes into a tough ziplock bag (I use a freezer bag, they seem to hold up better).
  2. Pound candy canes into a candy cane powder. I used a cheap rolling pin I bought just to crush candy or nuts. A sanitized mallet or other crushing tool could work as well.
  3. Once the candy canes are a powder, run them through a fine grid to remove the larger pieces of candy cane and set aside the larger pieces.
  4. Mix the fine candy cane powder with the 3/4 cups of powder sugar and set aside.

Cookie Filling

  1. In a bowl cream the cream cheese until smooth.
  2. Add powdered sugar and Garnish gradually.
  3. Add milk and mix until well blended.
  4. Scoop into a piping bag and set aside. (It doesn’t matter what nozzle you use, as long as the cream cheese mixture can flow through it with ease. You will be using this to fill the cookies.)

Making the cookies

  1. Preheat oven to 350
  2. Remove dough from the refrigerator.
  3. Pinch off about a tsp. of dough, it will be hard and crumbly
  4. Shape the dough into a ball
  5. With the handle of a large Wooden spoon, carefully mold the dough around handle to create a cavern in the middle. twist the handle slightly and carefully pull the dough off.
  6. Fill 2/3 of the cavern with the cream cheese filling.
  7. Pinch the dough together to seal the cavern, carefully shape it back into a ball, and place the now filled ball of dough on a greased cookie sheet (I used a glass pan)
  8. Repeat the process with the rest of the dough. You should have around 36 balls
  9. Bake for 12 min (It took 15 on my glass pans). Be sure not to brown them.
  10. Once baked, place the cookies on a cooling rack.
  11. halfway into their cooling process, gently roll the cookies in the rest of the garnish. Be careful not to break the cookie.
  12. Let cool the rest of the way and then serve.

Makes around 36 cookies

Holidays to Celebrate in January

The last two weeks have been nothing but holiday parties and New Year celebrations. Celebrating the classic times and then shedding the old to bring in the new. I know my last couple of weeks have been fun celebrating with family and watching as 2016 left to bring in the hopefully better 2017. It is almost sad to see the celebrations end as January 2nd rolls in. However, don’t despair. There are plenty of things to celebrate in January!

I bet you are quizzically looking at that last sentence. What on earth could there be to celebrate in January other then New Years Day? Much, I am happy to say! And we can have a party for each of these days! (I didn’t mean for that to rhyme, it just sort of happened that way)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Holidays to celebrate in January:
January 4 – National Spaghetti Day

    This one will be easy to celebrate. I am going to have a Family and friend dinner party featuring Spaghetti with several different sauces. Is it wrong that this may be my favorite holiday in January?

January 8 – Bubble Bath Day

    Now here is one everyone can enjoy…Although it may not be a “Party” day. It is more of a “Soak in the tub and let all the stress melt away” day. Of course kids will love this day as well. Get their favorite toys and explore the Bubbles of Mount. Bathtub.

January 10 – Houseplant Appreciation Day

    Here is something I didn’t know. Apparently houseplants can feel under appreciated. Therefore, Houseplant appreciation day is very important. Make sure every houseplant knows how much they are needed, I would say this is a perfect opportunity to throw them a party to show how much you care. Invite some plant friends (I hear spider plants are great at parties) and really set the music to ensure growth. Maybe some special plant food would be a great appreciation gift.

January 15 – National Hat Day

    The Mad Hatter has to be looking forward to this day, I mean Hats…that’s his thing. I know I will be wearing a rather unique piece and my family will be sharing in the fun. Disney Family created a fun Goofy Hat Printable to give us all something a little more…goofy

January 18 – Winnie The Pooh Day

    This day speaks for itself and is rather easy to create. Celebrate Winnie the Pooh day with a fun Winnie the Pooh party. I have posted a few Winnie the Pooh printables and party ideas that are sure to help with the celebration of a cute cuddly bear.

January 19 – National Popcorn Day

    Yummy Buttery bite size morsels that nearly melt in your mouth upon entry. Yeah I can live with that. Time to celebrate this day with a Star Wars Marathon!

January 25 – Opposite Day

    This day will be the worst. Simply Horrible as I try and figure out just how bad everything is in the world.

January 28 – Chinese New Year

    Happy New Year! And with that, Celebrations shall commence. PARTY TIME!

Obviously there are many more days to celebrate such and National Hug Day or National Bird Day. The trick to having a few good parties in the month of January is to find the days that speak to us. For me, Popcorn Day and Spaghetti Day are a must, as well as Winnie the Pooh Day. My family will enjoy these celebrations.

To help us figure out what holidays we would like to celebrate, Disney Family has created a fun printable calendar. Print and fill with the holidays that match what the family wishes to celebrate. It also helps to keep track of the many birthdays that seem to occur in January. Download the calendar at family.disney.com.

Here’s to a New Year and many more parties!

A visually spectacular and unabashedly emotional drama from director J.A. Bayona (“The Impossible”). 12-year-old Conor (Lewis MacDougall) is dealing with far more than other boys his age. His beloved and devoted mother (Felicity Jones) is ill. He has little in common with his imperious grandmother (Sigourney Weaver). His father (Toby Kebbell) has resettled thousands of miles away. Printable 3D Ornaments From Dreamworks Animation!

To help fans celebrate the holidays with some of our favorite Netflix shows, Dreamworks has created these awesome free templates to make 3D Christmas Tree Ornaments. Actually, I am fairly certain that these ornaments can be displayed anywhere at anytime! Geekery is not limited to the holidays and should be displayed to show off our fabdom love. To start the crafting process, simply click the image below to download the craft instructions and printable templates. Then print and create to decorate for the Holidays or any time of year.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

There are four different 3D ornaments that you and your family can create! I absolutely love the ones from Dragons: Race to the Edge and Voltron.

Dragons: Race to the Edge (my favorite)
Create a Scale Armor Ornament out of a 3 inch Styrofoam ball, , string, cardstock, a one inch hole punch, and a hot glue gun

  1. Print 1 copy of each texture on cardstock
  2. Punch out 70 circles from each page
  3. Glue String to the ball
  4. Glue circles to ball in layers to make it look like scales
  5. Display and enjoy

More instructions are in the Craft PDF

DinoTrux Wrecking Ball Ornament
With just a few pieces of printed paper, some string and a little tape, these wrecking balls interlock to take shape.

  1. Print out each of the sheets front and back, matching the color of the ornament shapes
  2. Cut out each shape and also along the dotted line of each tab
  3. Take one shape from each color and punch a tine hole in the center of it
  4. Cut three 8 inch segments of string and make a loop. Thread both ends through the hole and tape the ends down to the back side of the paper piece
  5. Slide the slits of the tabs into one another to create the ball shape. Keep going until all sides have been used. There are 12 pieces per ornament
  6. Display and Enjoy

Voltron Shield Ornaments (Another of my Favorites)
By gluing colorful pieces of paper together, everyone in the family can create their own Lion shield ornament to display on the tree.

  1. Print Template page on cardstock and cut out each piece along the dashed lines.
  2. Trace the template pieces onto special cardstock colors.
  3. Use black glitter cardstock for piece A
  4. Use silver foil cardstock for piece B and C
  5. Use your favorite lion color for piece D
  6. Cut out all template pieces.
  7. Glue Piece B on top of Piece A
  8. Glue piece C on top of piece B
  9. Glue piece D on the top of piece C
  10. Tie a string into a loop and apply hot glue to the cebter back of piece A and glue the loop onto the piece
  11. Repeat for each color of the lions (black, red, green, yellow and Blue)

TrollHunter Crystal Ornaments
Gathering crystals has never been easier now that we can make these crystal ornaments to hang on the tree. All you need is some color paper, a glue stick, thread and needle, and scissors.

  1. Print the templates on the color paper of your choice
  2. Cut out along the dotted lines
  3. score along the solid blue lines
  4. Puncture a very small hole in the red dot and sew both ends of the thread through the hole. Tape to the underside of the crystal
  5. Glue tabs to corresponding side to form the crystal.
  6. Display and enjoy

There are more instructions as well as helpful images in each file to help each person make these fun 3D ornaments. I know my family will be making the Scale Armor ornaments! They work for Dragons: Race to the Edge but also for many Fantasy shows such as Game of Thrones. The crystals can even be re-purposed in to Troll crystals from Frozen (shhhh, I didn’t say that).

Click the image below to download all four PDFs and begin the crafting holiday adventure! Be sure to also catch all the shows on Netlix this holiday, especially since Voltron continues it’s epic story in January.

Free Printable Moana Activities and Crafts

If you haven’t already seen the movie Moana, I do suggest it. It has wonderful music and a great story. Not to mention…I love Hei Hei. I think he may be my new favorite Disney Character (other than all things Star Wars). That chicken is so weird and it really does well as the plucky comic relief.

>

Also, when you watch Moana, see if you can find Sven from Frozen. Oh yes, he is in there! I laughed so hard when he appeared on screen. It took everything I had to not jump up and say “Oh hey it’s Sven”.
