Mother’s Day is just around the corner! Time to celebrate moms in a big way with gifts, chocolates, food, and more. I know my mom loves it when we do all the chores in the house. It isn’t every day moms get to relax, so I encourage families to truly make this day special.
Like many moms, I consider my mom to be a superhero. She has always been there for me, has helped me fight some major battles, comforts me when needed, and so much more! While these attributes make her heroic, they are not the only reason I think she is a superhero, or at the very least, has super powers.
Picture this. Mesquite Texas, 2009. My mom and I sit in an old apartment complex at a square card table. Her back is to the glass sliding backdoor. I sit across from her, staring outside across several apartment complex rooftops. A solitary white sneaker decorates the balcony. The shoe has been there since we moved in, a lasting reminder of the residences before. I didn’t have it in my heart to remove such a masterpiece, so it continues to weather each crazy storm.
Tonight is no different. The rain cascades from the clouds, blowing left and right in the gale-force winds. Lightning traces the sky, popping from one cloud to another in an endless electric dance. The delayed reverberating booms shake the glass. It’s a classic Texan night.
My mom looks up at me, waiting for me to move my backgammon piece. She smiles. I know I have already lost. No one can beat her. This is one of her super powers. I take my first piece and move it five places. She chuckles. Oh the pain of losing before I have lost. I take my second piece and make a wall to help block her entrance into her home base. It’s my last dying hope to defeat her by making it impossible for her to move. Lightning streaks across the sky. I count the seconds before the sound hits the apartment while she rolls her set of dice.
BOOM! 10 seconds. The storm is two miles away. My mom checks the window and looks back at me. I motion for her to continue her advance. She grabs her first piece and easily jumps my makeshift wall. The start of my inevitable loss. She reaches for her second piece, a grin stretches across her face, Just before she grabs that second piece, the lights flash, lightning strikes the building next door, a huge explosive boom from the lightning shakes every surface in the apartment, and then all goes silent.
I check on my mom, only to find that she is no longer in her seat. I call out to her but I get no answer. I turn in my chair to check the rest of the house, thinking, ‘did I just miss the rapture?’. Nope, I find her. In fact, she is all the way across the room, holding onto the closet doorknob, rocking back and forth while laughing maniacally. If she had been in a white cushioned room, this would have seemed normal. Instead, I simply stare at her as I realize she has a new super power…She can teleport from one place to another in an instant. My guess is her power is charged by the electricity in the air. Maybe I am the one in need of that cushioned room.
I am not sure if every mom has these specific super powers, but I do believe that almost every mom is a superhero. The printable party kit below will help celebrate all the super moms out there. Simply download, print, and create to make the perfect Mother’s Day event!
