Thanks Paramount Home Entertainment, I received the chance to review the movie, and here is what I thought

SPOILERS BELOW.

Let’s get past the fact that the humans look weird. ..I mean, really weird. The art style is different, similar to what one would see drawn in a high schooler’s notebook. With that said, this movie is fantastic! The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are back in action with a fresh new look and a fresh new vibe. Voiced by actual teenagers, these turtles eat pizza and face the bad guys with all their Turtle Power in a half shell.

For those expecting the classic story of our Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, don’t look to this film. Mutant Mayhem is an all new universe story where these teens look to fit in a world that possibly hates them. Some off the top of my head differences are: April O’Neal is a teenager and is often puking on screen, the turtles seek to be a member of society and attend high school, Splinter hates humans, other mutants are not evil and just want to vibe with others, Splinter ends up in a romance with a cockroach, and so on. However, these differences don’t make a bad movie, as stated above, it’s just different. Side note, get ready to chuckle at how Splinter looks. I laughed out loud at my first site of the master.

Making this movie true to the title, these Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are teenagers and act as such. Their language is hip to their age and their mannerisms match that of the youth today. (man, did I sound old there). In other words, the writers nailed the teenager vibe and dialog. Mutant Mayhem is basically a bunch of teenage kids looking to make a name for themselves and look cool doing it.

I think one of my favorite scene that really showcases our TMNT heroes is when they are in their first battle with some chop-shop bad guys. In an effort to get April back her scooter, Michelangelo, Raphael, Leonardo, and Donatello head into the shop and start kicking butt. This is when they realize that all of their hard work and studies have made them ninja masters. I also laughed so hard when Donatello realized, all he had was a stick.

Since this is a film for teenagers by teenagers, I will state this is more of a teen movie. There are several curse words, talks of murder, torture scenes, gross moments of mutations, and puking…lots of puking. While there are jokes placed at points to help lighten what is actually happening in the film, it is dark, intense, and gritty. The art may help simplify some of the scenes, but this is certainly not a kids film. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Mutant Mayhem is labeled PG and Common Sense Media says 8+, but I would say 13+ is where this film should be set.

The old has become new in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem with a new universe, a new art style, and a new take on a classic story. The dialog is hilarious and the film certainly vibes with the present day fans. While it may not be a nostalgic piece for us older fans, it is a great new take to bring the TMNTs back into the light. SKGaleana gives it five stars.
