Review: The House With A Clock in the Walls

There are movies where I wish I had done a little research before diving in and watching.  A House With A Clock in the Walls is one of those wishful “research” moments.    If I had known the director was some kind of horror buff, I would have stayed as far away as possible.  But my naivety led to a 2-hour nightmare.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

When I say nightmare, it is because I do not handle horror films very well and this one was far more on the occult side of things than I care to watch.  Shockingly, it is only rated PG, even with the satan heads on mechanical bodies, rising of the dead, and demonic characters making spells. I have no idea how this didn’t at least get a PG-13 rating. This movie matched better with The Craft than with children’s movies.

There wasn’t much I enjoyed about The House With A Clock in the Walls. I went in expecting a funny little film starring Jack Black, and I left needing to find a happy place.  Even the graphics and acting lacked luster.  From fake crying to a weird Jack Black baby, nothing seemed to mesh well.

I realize most reviews are from a 1-5 star rating, but to even give this a star seems generous.  I cannot in good conscience say it even deserved a tick in the scale.

NOPE… NOPE…NOPE….

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Thanks to Disney, I was able to review the DVD collection of Fancy Nancy Vol. 1 along with their adorable Fancy Nancy Toys.

    The DVD is a wonderful collection of episodes featuring an adorable little girl named Nancy and her goal of turning dull into chic. For example, in “Chez Nancy”, Nancy must turn a dull playhouse into a palace before her friends come over to play. Enlisting the help of her sibling and friends she transforms the dull building into something lavish, proving one can do anything when they set their mind to it.

    Of course, fancying up the place isn’t the only problem Nancy faces. Nancy must learn what is most important: Fancy or Family. Through her experiences, she learns what is most important and is humble enough to admit her mistakes. I found this wonderful. Not only does it teach kids to apologize and show remorse, but also helps them see that family and close friends are more important than anything, no matter how fancy. Ç’est Magnifique!

    This collection certainly earns its five stars.

    The Disney toys reflect Fancy Nancy’s style with glitter outfits, tiaras, and lots of pink. The toys I received featured the Fancy Nancy Play Set, a Fancy Nancy Plush Doll, and a >Fancy Nancy Canteen.

    1. Fancy Nancy Play Set

      The Fancy Nancy Play Set is all kinds of fun with sparkly clothes any girl will adore. It comes with six sparkly figures: Fancy Nancy, Jo Jo Clancy, Bree James, Grace, Frenchy, and Mrs. Devine. The figures are anywhere between 3-5 inches tall and they are the perfect size for most large dollhouses. Their gray bases keep them sturdy as long as they are not bent out of shape, which means imagination time is going to be a blast with all things fancy.

      NOTE: When removing the figures from the package do not pull or toggle them out by holding onto the figures – this will bend them. Just pop them out of the package by pushing up from the plastic base holding them in place. They may fly out with a pop so be careful who is standing nearby.

      The play set can be purchased from Amazon.com or ShopDisney

    2. Fancy Nancy Plush Doll

      This 13.5 inch doll is all kinds of fancy and it is Nancy approved. With her tiara, tutu, and pink shoes, she is ready to lavish up the place with her fancy style. The best part about this doll is that she is plush, meaning she is soft and easy to snuggle, carry, and love. Also, she makes a great bedtime companion. I absolutely love her.

      She also looks great underneath the Christmas Tree

      The doll can be purchased from Amazon.com or ShopDisney

    3. Fancy Nancy Canteen

      The Fancy Nancy Canteen displays BFFs Nancy and Bree on a pink background (of course!). It is made of hard plastic so it can handle a few drops, which is perfect in my house. The button activated top means water is never hard to get to and the straw makes it almost spill proof. I say almost, because where there is a will there is a way. Also, according to ShopDisney, the Canteen is leak proof and BPA free making it the perfect canteen for those on-the-go days.

      The Fancy Nancy Canteen can be purchased from Amazon.com or ShopDisney

    The Best DIY Advent Calendar!

    Advent Calendars are one of the most fun creations i have had the pleasure of enjoying. Getting a gift a day is never frowned upon, especially when you are a kid. I remember waking up every morning with expectations to a piece of chocolate, toy, or maybe even a folded paper dollar. It was 24 days of excitement.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Now, Advent Calendars are everywhere. Even Legos has their own special Star Wars Advent Calendars that are too die for. It comes with 24 Mini Figurines including a Rebel Snowman.

    Of course, Star Wars may no be on everyone’s list (GASP) and I know I love the personal touch. So making an Advent Calendar is certainly the way to go and takes only a small bit of effort.

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    1. First find the toys, candy, or whatever else you want to hid inside the Advent Calendar. It can be anything small. In this case, Hatchimals are Madelyn’s toy of the year and this set of 24 Hatchimal eggs makes the perfect toys to stuff in the Advent Calendar.

    2. Make 48 Origami boxes. Why 48? Well These awesome little boxes are going to need tops. So in order to have a lid, two need to be made. The video below is perfect for those who need to learn how to make a box.

      See, are they not the cutest?!?!

    3. Fill the cute boxes with the toys, or in this case Hatchimal eggs.

    4. Write Numbers in the boxes and form into a tree. The numbers can be mixed or in numerical order. And TADA, It is done. Get ready for some epic daily presents!

    Holly Star is a Treasure Hunt for Love

    Get ready for an all new Christmas adventure involving paintballs, puppets, pilfering grandparents, and of course a powerful Christmas kiss when “Holly Star” arrives on DVD and Digital Dec 4th. After losing her job as a puppeteer, Sloan returns home where she has a near death experience and her life flashes before her eyes. Before she knows it she goes on a crazy treasure hunt to find a huge bag of money that Santa buried. Sloan drags her paintball-obsessed best friend, her tango-dancing grandmother and her childhood sweetheart in on the treasure hunt as the mystery unfolds.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    SPOILERS BELOW

    Like many recent Christmas movies, Holly Star features the ever endearing cliche theme of a career girl (Sloan) returning to her small town home where she is in search of another job or something better. Being that Holly Star is a Christmas movie, Sloan finds a temporary job at a Christmas Tree Lot where an old flame is taking over the family business.

    What may not be considered Cliche is the side story of a treasure hunt. After a near death experience brings forgotten memories forward, Sloan believes she saw Santa bury treasure somewhere in town. Sloan’s entire goal is to find this treasure… even if it means attempting another near death experience. Oh yes, picture a crazy best-friend on a murder/death/kill pretend…possibly real… quest. There are several scenes where I was almost on the floor laughing. For example, KK, Sloam’s best friend, tries to kill her with a car. I think at that moment, KK loses all control and goes on a rampage.

    ~~~~~SPOILERS OF ENDING BELOW~~~~~~
    Of course, any decent Christmas movie will show that the greatest treasure in the world isn’t money or gold, but love, friendship, and family. Holly Star follows through with the holiday expectations and leads the audience to a warm closure… For the most part. It may not be very Christmasy of me, but I wanted to see the whole treasure hunt get completed and for everyone she cares about to stand there in shock thinking, “Wow, the Lobster Wars did exist.”
    This story was very fun to watch even if it was a bit cliche. I would say Holly Star is worth a peek for a good laugh. Check out the trailer below and get ready to watch Holly Star Dec. 4th.
    Full of wonder and adventure, The House With a Clock in its Walls mesmerizes audiences of all ages and keeps the magic alive when stars Jack Black (Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, Kung Fu Panda), Cate Blanchett (Ocean’s 8, Thor: Ragnarok) and Owen Vaccaro (Daddy’s Home, Mother’s Day) arrive as Uncle Jonathan, Mrs. Zimmerman and Lewis Barnavelt. In the most unexpected places, fantastical events, miraculous twists and suspense filled moments ensue in this “zany kids adventure” (The Hollywood Reporter) that soon captivates adults as well.     In The House With a Clock in its Walls directed by Eli Roth (The Green Inferno, Cabin Fever), Lewis Barnavelt (Vaccaro) goes to live with his Uncle Jonathan (Black) in a creaky and creepy mansion with an eerie tick-tocking heart. But when Lewis soon finds out he’s in the presence of magic practiced by his uncle and neighbor Mrs. Zimmerman (Blanchett), his new town’s dreary aura boosts to life in an exciting and dangerous way. Based on the beloved children’s classic book written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey, The House With a Clock in its Walls is written by Eric Kripke (creator of TV’s “Supernatural”) and co-stars Kyle MacLachlan (“Twin Peaks,” Inside Out), Colleen Camp (Clue), Renée Elise Goldsberry (“One Life to Live”), and Sunny Suljic (Mid90s, The Killing of a Sacred Deer).
