I got the chance to review Transformers: Rise of the Beasts and here is what I thought.
Warning: SPOILERS BELOW!
After the Transwarp Key is split and hidden on opposite ends of the Earth, The Maximals set into their roles of defenders as they watch over their assigned pieces. However, when Elena discovers a piece while investigating a weird statue decorated in unknown symbolism, the Autobots, Maximals, humans, and Terrorcons collide into a race for the greatest piece of machinery known to the universe. With the Transwarp Key, the Autobots could find their way home or the Terrorcons could call Unicron (the planet eater) to our universe.
With massive reservations and reluctance, Optimus Prime accepts the help of Noah and Elena to help find the second piece in Peru and save his team from the unbearable exile they face on Earth. However, knowing that Optimus Prime only wants to help his kind, Noah seeks to destroy the second piece to prevent Unicron from ever entering the universe and destroying his family and his home-world; thus stranding Optimus and his team on Earth forever.
Honestly, this type of story arc is well known in the movie world.
Bad guys beat up heroes,
Unlikely heroes combine their abilities to go on a quest to save the world,
Bad guys follow heroes,
Once heroes get the desired items, bad guys attack,
Bad guys recover item and call in the ultimate bad guy
Unlikely heroes combine their powers to beat bad guys saving the world a split second before destruction.
In my opinion the story arc is over used, predictable, and a bit boring. This type of arc often leads to a Story-Breaker Power trope, and Transformers: Rise of the Beasts, unfortunately, falls into the trap. No matter what, there is always an even greater enemy until you get to the godlike villain Unicron. Once we hit that godlike villain, there really isn’t any more the director can give us and we are stuck watching ultimate power being defeated by a peon…somehow. At this point, I would love to see a new story arc, a new direction in the franchise world.
Story-Breaker Power also comes into play with the standard villains. At times in the film they are overpowered, literally killing anything and everything that gets in their way, stating “rip the flesh from their bones.” At other times the villains seem almost reserved, hiding from humans. The Terrorcons have proven they have no regard for human life, which makes the viewer question why they don’t just fly into action and destroy a town in order to retrieve the second piece of the Transwarp Key. I mean, Unicron will eat the world, who cares about the Peruvian town?
While the story is a bit passé, there are fun scenes within the film. For example, the first car chase, featuring Mirage and Noah running from the cops, is hilarious and fun to watch. It has a lot of action happening in a short time with hilarious comedy as Noah tries to direct a self-driving car. Mirage also enacts his power to create mirage copies of himself to confuse the cops, allowing them to escape in the most epic way possible.
The fun scenes would be nothing without some amazing graphics, and the graphics in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts are out of this world. Every gear and slab of metal has a movement and a reason for that movement. From the explosions, to the transforming abilities of both Autobots and Maximals, it all makes sense. The team that analyzes and studies each animal and car for the perfect graphic movements deserves a raise. I especially love what they did with Airazor’s beak. It is one of the coolest mechanized pieces in the film. Every time she talked my eyes went straight to the beak.
In a way, the graphic and fun scenes make up for the over-done story line and Story-Breaker Power trope problem. If the viewer puts the story arc aside, Transformers: Rise of the Beasts is a fun film to watch. There is a bit of comedy for the fans to enjoy along with the epically done graphics. Basically, my review comes down to one quick sentence. I love the graphics and dislike the story arc. I give the movie 4 out of 5 stars

I got the chance to review The Super Mario Bros Movie Power up Edition and here is what I thought.
Warning Spoilers below.
‘Official’ critics can take a back seat when it comes to the new Super Mario Bros Movie. Their dislike and attempted destruction of the new Mario movie seemed to be an almost across-the-board coup in order to bring down a beloved game series. Their focus seemed to be more on the story and less on the amazing voice actors and art of the movie.
Unlike the critics, I find it wonderful that we have a Mario movie that sticks to the Mario genre. For the most part, we get our over-the-top characters that are capable of doing amazing things real world science would never allow. Where critics hate that nothing new is added, I love the nostalgic piece and adore the fact that we finally get something that sticks to the crazy Mario story. Granted, there are a few dull moments in the movie when the writers try to humanize the characters instead of leaving them action-packed wacky animated beings, but these moments are few and can be passed over quickly.
The story of Super Mario Bros isn’t that farfetched. Mario and Luigi are attempting to be the best plumbers in New York City. In order to prove themselves, they go down in the sewers to fix a leak. This is where the insanity begins, and normal becomes the world of animation. Mario and Luigi find a warp pipe and end up in different worlds. Mario finds himself in the Mushroom Kingdom and Luigi ends up in the hands of Bowser. Big surprise, Bowser wants to marry Peach. Another big surprise, Mario falls in love with Peach. Even bigger surprise, Mario teams up with Peach to save the kingdom and his brother from Bowser.
Along with the lovely, expected plot line, fans are given several Easter Eggs throughput the film along with recognizable Nintendo characters. We get to see rainbow road, Donkey Kong, shy guys, toad, and much more. Coming from a person who’s first gaming system was the original Nintendo, I love seeing all the characters on screen. The art and colors are amazing making the film fun to watch.
Of course, character art isn’t everything, the voice has to be spot on as well. I thought their choices were fantastic. A couple of my favorite voice actors from Super Mario Bros Movie are Chris Pratt and Jack Black. Chris Pratt voices Mario, which actually works. He may not be Italian, but it isn’t bad either. Pratt’s voice is iconic, recognizable, and easy to understand. This actually made me happy, because I really didn’t want to read the subtitles just to understand the easy to understand plot. Jack Black is making his way into everything recently from Star Wars to this Mario movie. He voices Bowser, and let me just say…He nails it. From the songs to the energy, Jack Black carries Bowser into the 21st century and beyond. I don’t think they could have found a better voice actor for the character. His skills as Po from Kung Fu Panda have paid off.
Sticking to the Mario genre, producing amazing art and colors, and adding the best voices to the characters, Super Marion Bros Movie nails the franchise! It is a family friendly, funny film that fans and new fans will come to love. For the overboard fans there are Easter Eggs, for the newer fans it is a great film to get to know the beloved characters from Mario to Bowser. This colorful animated film of lovable characters will catch the viewers as we watch our classic video game creatures enter into a new generation. It is amazing and I give The Super Mario Bros Movie 5 stars.

I received the chance to review Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves and here is what I thought.
WARNING Spoilers Below!
Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is a hilarious action comedy with funny one-liners and humorous banter. Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez perform in perfect harmony as the dynamic duo, Edgin and Holga. They trek across the land with their newly formed party to find relics and take down the evil Forge.
While their quest sounds serious, for us viewers, it’s rather haphazard, almost as if someone is rolling checks to see if the characters will succeed in their crazy schemes. For example, would throwing potatoes at a prison guard actually aid in an escape? Roll a strength check to find out. My guess is Holga rolled a nat 20 because the prison board gasped with shock screaming, “She’s throwing potatoes!” it was a perfect throw, a perfect distraction, and the perfect moment to grab poor Jarnathan, the Aarakocra, and dive out of the prison window. I will never look at a potato the same again.
An Aarakocra isn’t the only DND creature we see in Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves. Fans will spot Humans, elves, tieflings, Red Wizards, Mimics, an Owlbear, a Black Dragon, Yuan-tis, a Gelatinous Cube, a Displacer Beast, Themberchaud (Pudgy), Golems, Rust Monsters, Intellect Devourers, and more! The encounter with the Intellect Devourers is a hilarious scene as the party attempts to keep quiet while the monsters walk by. It’s as if the party rolled high on their stealth checks….or the team has a very low intelligence stat. As Edgin states, “Well, that’s a little hurtful.”
As far as the monsters go, the Displacer Beast was awesome to see, and the mimic is fantastic, but, I will admit…I love Pudgy. He is just a fat chibi dragon that looks to devour the world…and he does it with little effort. He may live in the Underdark, but he lights up the screen with his little round self. Pudgy is now on the list of my top five favorite Dragons.
Pudgy never gives up trying to eat our team of heroes, even after being stabbed in the head by Zenk. This is where Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves turns into an offshoot of Galaxy Quest, teaching the audience to… Say it with me now, “Never Give up! Never surrender!” Although Edgin’s rendition is a little more confusing, he also believes in the motto of the Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector, stating, “We must never stop failing, because the minute we do, we’ve failed” This means that we should never give up because as long as we are failing there is still hope, hope that we will get it right. However, since Galaxy Quest is in the future, perhaps the Intrepid Crew of the NSEA Protector adapted Edgin’s motto for their own. They may actually be plagiarists.
There are so many scenes that will make the audience laugh, I would need several blog posts to go over them all. From digging up graves and talking to the dead to melting illusions, most scenes are created with a purpose, to make us laugh. I often had to pause the film so I could laugh it out. I was unable to hear the movie otherwise.
With great character synergy, wonderful DND monsters, and a fun lesson, Dungeons & Dragons Honor Among Thieves is a fantastic movie and is fun for fans and adventurers. I give the movie FIVE stars. I think Pudgy would agree.

I received the opportunity to review Transformers: EarthSpark: Season 1, Episodes 1-10, and here is what I though
WARNING: Spoilers below
Get ready for a topsy turvy story with new bots, old friends, and new enemies. This series will make your head spin because the enemy of the Autobots, the leader of the Decepticons, Megatron, is now on the side of good. He is reformed and cares deeply for all of the Decepticons. He works with the Autobots to keep the humans and Cybertronians safe. As a Transformer fan, this blew my mind.
Who has replace Megatron as the ultimate bad guy? Turns out there is a new half-man half-robot cyborg named Mandroid. No joke. The new antagonist, the one seeking to destroy Earth and the Cybertronians, is named Mandroid. His real name is Dr. Meridian, but everyone calls him Mandroid behind his back. I love the doctors real name, but apparently, creativity is dead and there was a lack of effort to come up with an epic bad-guy name.
While I am not crazy about the name, Mandroid, Dr. Meridian is an epic villain and certainly an evil doing maniac. Dr. Meridian started out working for G.H.O.S.T. helping the Autobots and the human race. However, he eventually turns to the evil side, believing that all Cybertronians are bad and need to be eradicate for the safety of all humans. Dr. Meridian begins turning himself into the very enemy he seeks to destroy. In his mind, it is the ultimate sacrifice for the people of Earth.
With the Autobots and Decepticons teaming up against an epic bad guy, the series is fun to watch. For the younger audience there are also several learning moments such as bullies don’t win, teamwork, and be yourself. The show ends up being well rounded cartoon series.
A quick note to parents. Transformers: EarthSpark: Season 1, Episodes 10 does bring out some controversial subjects. As always, I suggest the parents watch the show before letting their kids sit to watch the cartoon.
For those who love the Transformers Fandom, we are giving away a DVD of Transformers: EarthSpark: Season 1, Episodes 1-10. Use the Rafflecopter form below to enter for a chance to win. Follow, comment, and tweet for more entries. Many will enter, only one will win.
