UHU Enters the World of Mario with Epic Printables

Uhu is getting ready for back to school with their brand new fun paper crafts featuring Mario, Peach, and Luigi! They ate available to download now on the UHU website.

About UHU
UHU is a German company known for their glues. If we need something to stick together, they got us covered. From domestic, to hobbyists, to professional adhesive needs, the large selection of glue provides several choices for specific projects. I personally have never used UHU glue, I can’t recall seeing it in stores in my area, but they seem to be a very popular brand elsewhere in the world. I mean they have been around for almost 100 years…perhaps I should order a stick and try it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

My main interest for visiting their site is their occasional themed paper crafts they share during different times of the year. This time it is Back To School featuring Mario. Let me just say..EPIC! We can download Mario’s hat and mustache, Peach’s Crown, Mario, Peach, and Luigi banners, as well as a photo frame! Note: All crafts will require glue; they are provided by a glue company after all.

To make:

  • Download the PDF by clicking “Download” or “Get Started” on the UHU website or by clicking the images below.. The UHU website also includes build videos that are very helpful.
  • Print the PDF in color on cardstock or copy paper
  • Follow the instructions included in each PDF

How To Throw an Are You Afraid of the Dark? Midnight Society Meeting

We got The Midnight Society Kit! With the release of Are You Afraid of the Dark? on DVD, I got the chance to get a Midnight Society kit featuring epic collectibles. Now it’s time to find out who in the family can tell the scariest story around the DIY campfire to claim one of these said collectibles.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The opening letter states:

This box has been submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society…

Inside, you’ll find everything you need for you and your family to host your very own Midnight Society meeting: A glow-in-the-dark membership pin, a flashlight, a page of spooky story starters, and instructions for how to make your own “campfire” for indoor camping. For extra fun, we’ve also included a scarily delicious s’mores recipe and everything you will need to make your own!

After the opening letter, we pulled back the black tissue paper and found a gigantic bag of Jumbo Marshmallow. Yeah, these suckers are not just large, they are enormous and perfect for the delicious s’mores. The box also included a box of Graham Crackers and two melted chocolate bars. While the crackers made it just fine, the heat melted the chocolate bars into a liquid goo. With the summer heat and a long transit, the chocolates never had a chance. Let’s have a moment of silence for the poor innocent chocolate bars…of course, we could totally tell the scary story of the chocolate bar’s revenge… >:)

The poor, poor chocolate bars

The box also contained a really cool pin and flashlight. Since only one pin was included in the box, we decided the scariest story will win the pin. That way, each time we have a scary story night, the pin will change hands.

The Midnight Society Pin
The Midnight Society Flashlight

Unfortunately, the chocolate that came with the kit melted in transit. That happens in 100 degree weather. Luckily, we had Kit-Kat bars in the freezer! A good s’more needs chocolate so these were a necessity. We followed the recipe to make some delicious desserts with our own little Midnight Society twist. They are now the “Coffin S’mores”. I have shared the original recipe here.

Coffin S’Mores

Once the Coffin S’mores were ready to go, it was time to setup camp. We did our best to follow the instructions included but with COVID and the lack of paper towels in the stores, we had no empty paper towel rolls to make the fire. We did, however, have a few extra empty toilet paper rolls (amazing, I know), so we taped those together to form a long tube. From there it was a simple draw, cut, color, and tape to create a blazingly hot fake flickering fire. (Fire instructions can be found here)

We had a few friends pop on in to join the scary story night. They were very quiet throughout the night so I think they were only here for the marshmallows and the s’mores. I can’t blame them, chocolate is sooo good.

Baby Toothless and Baby Yoda enjoying the campfire

To create your own Midnight Society Meeting, I have included a small checklist of things you will need. It takes less than 10 min to make the campfire and everyone can be included in the process. It does take a team to help setup camp. The s’mores are faster yet with just a minute of prep time. As for the scary stories, I have included the helpful spooky scary story starters in the checklist below. These will help the stories begin. Where they end is up to the story teller.

Are you Afraid of the Dark is now on DVD. You can grab a copy from Amazon.com. Please check out my review because it’s not friendly for all ages. Even I was freaking out with all the crazy bugs and clowns. “Shiver”

Printable Cubeecraft Template of Miko from Glitch Techs

There is a cartoon on Netflix that I have enjoyed watching called Glitch Techs With video games, tech support, and all the geeky coolness involved, it really has captured my attention. The two main characters are High Five and Miko. Together they must save the world from game glitches that enter the real world and cause massive destruction.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Because I am enjoying this cartoon so much, I decided to make a cubeecraft of a couple of the characters. I thought it would be perfect to start with Miko since she is my favorite character from the series. I love her enthusiasm and creativity. Her “rush in first and ask questions later” attitude matches my own recklessness. However, she is far more coordinated than I am. She can back up her brashness with a good kick, punch., or an off the wall dance off.

This Miko cubeecraft features Miko in her work uniform when she is capturing and fighting glitches.

To Build the Cubeecraft:
Materials needed:
Printer
Card stock
scissors
x-acto knife

To make:

  1. Cut out each item along the outer black lines.
  2. Cut along the white on each tab using the x-acto knife
  3. Cut along each red line using the x-acto knife
  4. Fold along each inner solid black line and slide each tab into the slots you created with an x-acto knife to form a cube of the head, body, arms, and feet
  5. Slide the arms through the red slots on either side of the body.
  6. Slide the feet through the red slots at the base of the body.
  7. Slide the now completed body through the red lots of the head.

To download the printable papercraft cubeecraft of Miko click the image below and save it to your computer. Then print and create by following the instructions above.

How to Get a Free Book from Kellogg’s Feeding Reading Program

From now until the end of September, Kellogg is giving away books with their new Feeding Reading Program! You read that right…FREE BOOKS! And the best part is, we can choose which book from 125 titles in three different reading levels! On top of that, there are no shipping charges! This is a win all around.

Kellogg’s Feeding Reading program will offer parents, teachers, and kids fun ways to fuel minds and bodies for back to school success. And by teaming up with Penguin Random House, we’re building kids’ reading confidence and empowering young imaginations.

Kellogg’s Family Rewards
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Getting the free books is fairly easy. Simply buy participating merchandise from now to the end of September, upload the receipt with the qualifying purchases (each receipt must be uploaded separately and within 30 days of purchase, no later than 10/30/20), and wait for the credits to be added to your account. Once the credits are added, select the books you desire and have them shipped to your home. There is, however, a limit of 10 books per participant. See Kellogg’s Family Rewards for more details.

I tested this process out and it works! Check out the Mad Libs books my family gets to enjoy!

Books I selected to receive.
Look how large the Best of Mad Libs is compared to the normal book. WOW

After I tried out the process I have a few tips.

  • You will need an account on Kellogg’s Family Rewards website. But this is actually very awesome with all the freebies they have! On their site, under their rewards tab, they have 16 printables featuring coloring pages, games, and books.
  • Make sure you upload your receipt in the right area. There are two areas where you can upload your receipt. One will allow you to earn family reward points and the other earns you book credits. You can upload the same receipt to both.
  • The credit number at the top of the screen states how many credits you have earned, not how many you have to spend. You have to keep track of how many you have spent and how many you have yet to spend. We have to do math…nice one Kellogg’s.

Follow these tips and the instructions provided by Kellogg’s and you will be enjoying books in no time. On a side note, if your family doesn’t need or want the books, it is easy to donate to a school or library of your choice! All it takes is clicking DONATE instead of KEEP when you order the book.

We give Kellogg’s Feeding Reading program an A+! What a great way to celebrate back o school! Thank You Kellogg’s!

Are You Afraid Of The Dark? Latches onto Our Irrational Fears

Do you like scary stories? Because tomorrow, the reboot to one of my all time favorite shows when I was a kid, will be released on DVD! Are You Afraid of the Dark? will creep into people’s homes, enticing them with a fun scary story. But what would happen if the stories we love so much were actually based on reality? The Midnight Society may just learn the answer to that question.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I received the epic chance to review this movie! Actually, when they asked me if I was willing to watch the new reboot and write about it, I jumped at the chance. Are You Afraid of the Dark? started my love for creature features and other scary movies. I had to see if the reboot did the original justice.

NOTE: SPOILERS BELOW

In the words of Akiko, a member of the Midnight Society, “Clowns Suck.” In fact, most scary movies that involve clowns…I don’t watch. Ever since I watched Killer Clowns from Outer Space, clowns have been a no-go. However, because this is an Are You Afraid of the Dark? mini-series/movie, I put my irrational yet fully rational fear aside and watched the film. Ironically, the other members of my family had me watch the movie first before they would even sneak a peek. There is nothing like being the guinea pig. Again, in the words of Akiko, “I hate clowns.”

On the plus side, the amount of clowns depicted in the Are You Afraid Of The Dark? mini series is minimal. I mean they are there, they are creepy (like the one without eyes…shiver), but they are also not that involved in the story. In fact, my fear for clowns quickly dwindled as Mr. Tophat took to the stage. So many scorpions…man eating scorpions. And I don’t mean large scorpions that eat people, I literally mean Mr. Tophat eats a freaking scorpion!

Scorpions…why did it have to be scorpions? Here is another of my irrational yet rational fears along with spiders and bugs. I could have lived without insects or arachnids featured in Mr. Tophat’s story. To be honest, I never really learned of their significance. They seem to be there just to creep the audience out. Since they were so prevalent, I really wish there was more about them, such as: why does Mr. Tophat eat them, why are they controlled by him, and what is the meaning of the scorpion coin? I guess I should be thankful that there weren’t more creepy crawlies, I was already squirming in my seat.

Although the ambiguity of the scorpion has left me with questions, the mini series itself is awesome. The creators continued the love for the original with a nod to the original music. It brought back so many creepy nostalgic moments of watching the 1990s series. We also have The Midnight Society and the iconic beginning to every story, “Submitted for the approval of the Midnight Society.” When the fire blazed and this statement echoed through the forest, the audience knew the scary story would begin. However, with this reboot, once the fire goes out, the scary stuff just gets worse.

When the story becomes reality, the Midnight Society featuring Gavin, Akiko, Louise, Graham, and newbie Rachel must find a way to save their friends before it’s too late, even if that means they have to take a trip to the state of potatoes, Idaho. Yes, Idaho. I wouldn’t think Idaho would be the most scary state there is, but if a spooky carnival comes to town, I suppose any state can be scary. I do find it neat that the awesome showdown takes place in such an unused state in cinematic movies.

Epically, the showdown at the Carnival of Doom in Idaho is not mere potatoes. It sheds light on a dark past and an unfortunate prediction. While the whole flashback is fairly predictable, it does bring understanding to Mr. Tophat’s backstory. And let me just say…If you don’t figure it out while you watch Are You Afraid of the Dark?, Mr. Tophat is craaaazy….crazy scary.

Which leads me to the info about this crazy scary mini-series. For families with children, this series is not rated. While that may make some think it is safe for a younger audience, I highly advise against it. There are many scary moments, zombies, creepy clowns, kidnapped children, and dark forces at work. This movie also messes with our sense of reality. Make sure the child watching can tell the difference and handle intense situations like those in psycho-thrillers. I would say keep this at tween to teen. Common Sense Media suggests ages 11 and up.

A good rule of thumb is parents should screen the movie and decide if their child can handle such a film. Trust me, as an adult, you will enjoy the film. It gave me a fright, which is what Are You Afraid of the Dark? is all about. If you like scary stories you will enjoy this one. I give it 5 stars.

Be sure to enter the giveaway for this film. This will give you a chance to win a copy of the DVD. Many will enter only one will win! Click the image below to head over to the giveaway page and follow the instructions on the form. Good Luck!
